An old commission from Out magazine. My original sketch had a guy dressed as Christ as the central character. This made the editors a little nervous for some reason so it was changed to the cowgirl. The Christ was inspired by a memory from my first trip to San Francisco in 1990 to attend a Ring Cycle at SF Opera. It also happened  to be Pride Day while I was there. After the dykes on bikes roared away, the parade kicked off with a long hair, bearded guy in a loin cloth sashaying down Market Street in killer heels, his entire body and face covered in pink paint and glitter! His pink arms were stretched out along a giant cross which moved along behind him on a small wheel at the bottom. The paper nailed to the cross read “Martyrs For Love,” – one of the most incredible, inspiring entrances I ever saw!
