Cosi Fan Tutte in Toronto

I’ve been working on a portfolio of fantasy opera set designs the past few years. I would LOVE to design a real opera someday! (You can see more by clicking on “Opera” above) Here is a sketch for Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte. This production updates the action from 18th century Naples to Toronto in the late 1960s. The story concerns two friends who make a bet on their girlfriends’ fidelity. They pretend they’ve been drafted and return in disguise, each attempting to seduce the other’s date to test their faithfulness. In my conception the air-headed girls, Dorabella and Fiordiligi, (with the help of Despina, their cynical servant) run a Motel on Lakeshore Boulevard. Their boyfriends come back as American hippie/draft dodgers, injecting some illicit glamour into the dreariness of ┬áthe city at that time. I’m imagining lots of Formica and shiny plastic on this single unit set that could be lit all kinds of ways to provide interest for what is rather a long (though fabulous!) evening of singing.
